Two cities of trees, two kinds of problems

The north side and the county edges are pine country: drought-stressed ponderosas dropping limbs, beetle-hit trees drying into hazards, and open-grown pines catching wind they were never shaped for. The old neighborhoods — South Hill, Browne’s Addition, Manito — are hardwood country: century-old elms and maples with root systems fighting basalt-influenced clay that limits how deep they can anchor. That’s why the same windstorm snaps pines in Mead and tips whole elms out of parking strips on Bernard. Reading which failure your tree is headed for is the skill; the saw is just the tool.

Arborist Services. Assessments and tree-health calls before the expensive decision: is it a hazard, can it be saved, what does the lean actually mean.

Tree Trimming & Pruning. Crown thinning, deadwood removal, roof and service-drop clearance — $200–900 per tree.

Stump Grinding. Finish the job and get the lawn back — $150–400 by diameter.

Permits, in one paragraph

Most tree removals on private residential property in Spokane need no city permit. The exceptions: designated heritage trees, critical areas, and shoreline zones near the river. Street trees in the public right-of-way are different — those always require an Urban Forestry permit with inspections. Not sure which yours is?
